Sailfish are among the favorites of a lot of anglers. They
are small enough
that you can catch them on light tackle and come inshore
enough that a lot of
small boats can even get their shots. Like the White Marlin they are very
acrobatic and more than one will come up at a time. They have a huge dorsal fin
which is why the name. The Sailfish is the reason people
spend thousands of
dollars to go to Mexico, Florida and even Central America on the West coast,
but we get a fair shot of them right here in North Carolina,
and it seems to be
getting better every year. Late summer and early fall is the prime time for them
here, with many boats seeing quite a few in a trip and
hooking multiples at a
time. They do come as early as spring and as late as the end of October. There
are one or two other billfish that we catch here, but
they are rare and very
much fall into the White Marlin and Sailfish category.
